Kinja'd!!!

My morning started off in at O’Reillys. Whilst loading whatever I bought, a man pulls up to me in a spanking new Elantra GT. He asks me how I’m doing and whatever. He’s sweating. He’s stammering. His eyes are glazed over. I get a sob story about how his wife, and or daughter, are at a Hospital conveniently located about 50 miles north of our location and asks me for gas money. But he offered to totally pay me back sometime.

Buddy, the key is to pull up to vehicles that cost MORE than $1,000, and not me and my pickup. You’ve got to make it partially believable. I said no, but I wanted to say more things, like get help, or fuck off, or let me see your gas gague, etc.

“If you can’t afford a new Elantra, there’s public transit if you can’t afford the gas.”

While driving a beat to shit E38 (cracked bumpers, dent on one door), I still get people asking for money. I usually say look at the car and I say my wallet is empty thanks to this thing.

I get asked for money all the time. I may have paid $1200 for my truck but it looks better than $1200.

I get those people a lot, but it’s normally a lady dragging her child by the wrist whose husband is ‘in the military’ and they need to get to the doctors or whatever. Feel bad for the kids getting indoctrinated in to that life. One of the ladies hangs out at my primary gas station and she’s out there pulling the scam all week with 12ish year old rain or shine heat or frozen.

I get similar stories about every third time I get gas. I’ve heard it all. At least offer to clean the windsheild or something. Geez, panhandlers these days!

Drugs really got ahold of these people. I could never ask for a handout. I would at least ask if they had any yard work I could do. I feel really bad for the young ones. They had their whole life ahead of them, and it’s probably gone now. I had one guy that was around 300lbs once (unusual for an addict), telling me how hungry he was. How are you going to walk up to a slender guy almost half your size, and tell him you are hungry? I said, “looks like you’re eating better than me”.

Hmm. I haven’t seen this form of panhandling in Hell Paso; our panhandlers tend to all stick to the intersections of our Interstate. Being one who is inclined to hand a grifter a couple bucks (or actual food if I have it), I think my immediate response to a ‘need gas’ panhandler would be, “Pull your car up to the pump and I will put two gallons in your car.”

I’d wager that their response to that offer would be quite revealing.

We don’t have as many of those pants handlers in Nash/Knox. Most of the homeless here sell the homeless paper. The worst 2 places for panhandling are The Strip(right off of campus...where there are broke college kids... These people are stupid) and downtown Nashville by the Honky Tonks

I’ve actually watched someone out of my rear view mirror that was on their way over to my car to ask for money. I started up my car and it let out a massive exhaust rattle...they literally stopped in their tracks and turned around.

about 4 months ago i ran out of gas AT the gas station. the gas gauge on the truck doesnt work, and it will die or sputter several times before it is flat out. i have a mile of fuel line between the tank and the pump too.so it sputters and dies as im coming up on the ONLY gas station for 10 miles.i manage to coast it into the station. its out in the middle of NOWHERE. it was early in the morning before the station actually opens its doors, but the pumps still work off credit. couldnt get any of about 5 people to lend a card in exchange for the cash IN HAND. ended up stuck at the station for 30 min until it finally opened its doors.

the part that sucks about the city people moving out into the country, is that the people around me have changed. a few years ago ANY of the people at the pumps would have helped out.

Tell them to go to the gas station and you’ll buy them a couple gallons. If they don’t actually need gas watch them freak out then refuse.

The neat thing about gas is they can’t return it for a refund as soon as you turn your back.
